For over 45 years, Mariposa Women and Family Center has been a beacon of hope in Orange County, evolving and expanding its mental health services to meet the ever-changing needs of the community. What began as a center focused on substance use treatment for women has blossomed into a comprehensive resource offering mental health services, family support, and so much more. Join us as we take a look back at Mariposa’s remarkable journey and celebrate how far we’ve come in providing vital mental health services in Orange County.

A Seed of Hope: The Founding of Mariposa and Mental Health Services Orange County

In 1977, Fran McGowan envisioned a space where women struggling with substance use could find support and healing. Mariposa opened its doors, providing a much-needed haven for women seeking recovery. This initial focus on substance use treatment laid the foundation for Mariposa’s commitment to addressing the root causes of challenges faced by individuals and families seeking mental health services and education.

Expanding Horizons: Addressing the Needs of Women

The 1980s brought a crucial realization: women often turn to substances for different reasons than men, frequently intertwined with underlying mental health concerns. Mariposa recognized this critical connection and expanded its services to include mental health support. This forward-thinking approach allowed Mariposa to provide more holistic care, addressing both the physical and emotional well-being of its clients.

A Growing Family: Embracing Men, Children, and Families

The turn of the millennium saw Mariposa evolve once again. Recognizing the interconnectedness of family well-being, Mariposa expanded its services in 2013-2014 to include men, children, and families. This pivotal shift marked a move towards comprehensive, family-centered care, understanding that supporting each member of the family unit strengthens the whole. From individual therapy to family counseling, Mariposa became a place where everyone could find support and healing, accessing needed mental health services.

Reaching Further: The Power of Virtual Mental Health Services Orange County

In 2019, Mariposa embraced the power of technology to make its mental health services even more accessible. The launch of virtual mental health services provided a convenient and flexible option for clients, breaking down barriers related to transportation, scheduling, and accessibility. This innovative approach ensured that more individuals could receive the mental health services they needed when they needed them.

A New Chapter: Enhanced Care Management & Treatment (ECMT)

Late 2023 marked another milestone in Mariposa’s history with the launch of the Enhanced Care Management & Treatment (ECMT) program. This exciting new initiative has already seen tremendous success, providing comprehensive, integrated care for individuals with complex needs seeking more than just mental health services. ECMT exemplifies Mariposa’s ongoing commitment to innovation and providing cutting-edge health services to the community.
